Joanna Lumley, actress, writer and campaigner, was born in Kashmir to parents who had both spent their lives in India. Her father, who had been a Chindit during the war, served with the 2nd/6th Gurkha Rifles and the family followed the regiment from India to Hong Kong and Malaya. The Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, home of the Gurkhas, fascinated Joanna; her first visit was following the successful outcome of the Gurkha Justice Campaign, which succeeded in gaining ex-soldiers the right to remain and work in the UK after they retired.
Joanna has appeared in numerous plays, films and television programmes; she may be best remembered for the role of Patsy in "Absolutely Fabulous" and for her recent documentaries, including visiting the Northern Lights and following the Nile from Egypt through Sudan and Ethiopia to Uganda and Rwanda.
The welfare of the people of Nepal, and particularly the children, is a concern she shares with Freedom Matters and she is proud to be a tiny part of such an effective team.
